Biography

Charles was born about 1844 Herefordshire. Parents being Charles Stevens and Eliza Jones.

A baptism was held in Herefordshire on the 5th day of January 1845, for Charles Stevens, parents Charles Stevens and Eliza Stevens.

1851 Residence Bodenham, Herefordshire, England Charles Stephens age 6, his father Charles Stephens, age 33, birthplace Leominster, Herefordshire, occupation Farm Labourer, his mother Eliza Stephens, age 28, birthplace Ullingswick, Herefordshire. Siblings in the household Sarah Stephens, age 4, birthplace Hope Under Dinmore, Herefordshire and James Stephens, age recorded as 0 years, birthplace Bodenham, Herefordshire.

Note: Surname transcribed/enumerated as Stephens

Charles possibly came out to South Australia with his parents on the ship named the Surge, Captain W. E. Maurice, from London 22nd January / Gravesend 25th January / Plymouth 13th February 1852, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 1st June 1852.

The Passenger list image records the family as follows Stevens, Charles age 34, wife Elizth age 38, Children Charles age 6 (7), Sarah age 3 (4) and James age 1 year.

1866 Charles Stevens married Jane, only daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Webb, of Macclesfield, the marriage was held at the St James Church Blakiston, Mount Barker.

Charles wife Jane ( Webb ) Stevens, died April 1877, residence at the time of her death Western Flat, Macclesfield, Strathalbyn.

1877 month of December, at the Christ Church Blakiston, Charles Stevens age 33, widower, married Jane age 25, second daughter of the Mr. and Mrs. T. Alexander, of Mount Barker.

The family lived at Macclesfield. where he had resided until quite recently. Also Farming at Meadows Mount Barker.

Charles Stevens in his 90th year passed away in 1934, Macclesfield, Mount Barker. His remains were interred in the Mount Barker cemetery.
