Fred was born in 1900 in Plumstead, southeast London, England, the son of Frederick Thomas Stevenson, a "Stoker in Arsenal" and Sarah Dewhurst Stevenson ("late Pain formerly Henly").[1]

Fred married Nellie (Wilks) Stevenson in 1928 at the registry office in Willesden, Middlesex (now part of London).[2] Fred was a "motor omnibus driver" at least between 1928 and 1933.[2][3][4] Nellie and Fred had three children in London: Joan, Sheila, and Sydney "Peter".

The family lived at the following addresses in greater London:

  • At marriage (1 July 1928): Fred: 76 Church Road, Willesden, northwest London (historic Middlesex); Nellie: 13 Craven Road (perhaps Craven Park Road), perhaps Willesden.[2]
  • At Joan's birth (30 Aug 1929): 3 Bonny Street, St Pancras (now part of Camden), north-central London (historic Middlesex).[3]
  • On Fred's bus driver's licence (6 Feb 1933): 10 Marthorne Crescent, Wealdstone, Harrow, on the edge of northwest London (historic Middlesex).[4]
  • An update on Fred's bus driver's licence (27 Feb 1933): Woodcroft Avenue, Wealdstone, Harrow.[4]
  • At registration of Sheila's birth (Jul-Sep 1933): perhaps in/near Hampstead, north-central London (historic Middlesex), as that is where her birth was registered.[5]
  • At registration of Peter's birth (Oct-Dec 1936): perhaps in/near Camberwell, south London (historic Surrey), as that is where his birth was registered.[6]
  • Last address before Nellie and the children moved to New Zealand (8 Dec 1939): 7 [indecipherable, looks like Millow, maybe Milton?] Rd, Herne Hill, South London (historic Surrey).[7]

Fred moved to Auckland, New Zealand in c. 1938 and the rest of the family followed in 1939.[8] The cost of passage for Nellie and the children (approx £120) was loaned and part-funded by the London County Council, arranged by the Council's Public Assistance Department.[9] Nellie and her three children are recorded as leaving London for Auckland on the Rangitane on 8 Dec 1939.[7]

In New Zealand, Fred worked as a car park attendant.[10][11] He also fought in World War II.[8]

In 1966, Fred and Nellie's daughter Sheila died in tragic circumstances in Papua New Guinea.[12]

Fred died in February 1982. Causes of death on the death certificate were Bronchopneumonia (1 week) and Cerebrovascular accident (1 1/2 years). He was cremated at Hastings. At the time, he was living at Braemore Rest Home, Middle Road, Havelock North.[10] Nellie had died there five months prior.[8] Their son Peter died tragically in Auckland six months later.[13][8]

As at 2022, Fred and Nellie are survived by the children of their daughter Joan (one of whom was the son of Sheila, adopted as a baby by Joan and her husband), and their own children, step-children, and grandchildren. Their descendants live mostly in New Zealand but some in Australia and England. Fred and Nellie's three children, one grandson (Sheila's other son Colin Andrew Simpson (abt.1963-)), and one great-grandson have passed away.[8]
