John Stewart was born in 1842 and was baptised on 8 Mar 1842 at Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland.[1] He was the son of Francis Stewart (1821–) and Margaret MacFarlane (1821–).

John Stewart married Agnes Menzies on 29 Sep 1876 at Corry Glen, Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland.[2] They had four children during their marriage;
