Birth and Parents

John Stone (or John atte Stone) was born about 1420, the son of Walter.[1]

Marriage

The name of the wife of John Stone has not been learned; they were married about 1445. [2]

The first name of the wife of John Stone is thought to be Elizabeth (last name Unknown), they were married about 1445 and had four sons of which Simon was the second born. “Barons” was secured by John Atte Stone in 1468 or 1469.

Barons

John Stone was the first member of the Stone family who occupied a small estate in Ardleigh, for over four centureies called "Barons." The estate is located in the southwest parft of Ardleigh near the Great Bromley boundary line. [1]

In 1473 (Trinity term, 13 Edward IV) John Deryfall, yeoman, of Ardeley, co. Essex, was summonsed to answer John Stone of same, yeoman, for debt for use of parft of a croft of land, parcel of Barones in said Ardeley. They had made an agreemet for annual rent of 12s 6d, John Deryfall had used the land but not paid the rent. [3]

Context

John Stone lived during the reigns of Henry VI (1422-1461), Edward IV (1461-1483), Edward V (1483), Richard III (1483-1485) and Henry VII (1485-1509). [2]

His youth and early manhood was during the time of the expulsion of the English from France (1430-1453). Started by the inspiration and achievements of Joan of Arc. This reserves, the general incapacity of Henry VI, and political ambitions of the nobility finally led to civil war in England. In 1450 arose a Peasant’s Rebellion, led by Jack Cade, under his leadership a large mob invaded London and commenced to plunder the city, but the rebellion was soon suppressed. This insurrection was Crown quickly followed by the “War of the Roses”, or the struggle for the English Crown between the Houses of Lancaster and York, which raged intermittently from 1455 to 1485, and which exterminated the ancient feudal nobility of England. [2]

Death

John Stone died in 1487. At a court of the Manor of ?Bovills held on the day of Mars next after the Feast of the Conception of the Blessed Virgin, 3 Henry VII (Tuesday, 11 December 1437), Walter Stone appered at the court and made fealty to the lord for two crofts and a garden adjacent called Barons, held by copy of court roll which late was held by [blank] his father. [1]

Issue

  1. Walter, born about 1445 Eldest son. On the death of his father in 1487 he succeeded to the land called "Barons" in Ardleigh. P:robably died before 1500, without male issue. [2]
