Mrs. Martha Stratton Mulford, early Cincinnati resident and mother of Ren Mulford, Jr., Cincinnati advertising man, died yesterday in Hamilton, Ontario, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Richmond Cuthbert, with whom for years she had passed her summers. She was 90 years old.

Mrs. Mulford was the daughter of William A. Stratton, who, although a Philadelphian, was one of the early masters of Ohio River transportation. One of the first steamers carrying passengers and freight between Pittsburg and Cincinnati bore his name. Orphaned when 12 years old she found herself, together with eight sisters, in the care of her grand mother, the daughter of Colonel Robert Brown, of the New Jersey forces in the Revolutionary War. Thus in the atmosphere of personal reminiscence of those early days when the nation was born she grew to young womanhood.

Coming to Cincinnati when she matured she met an old New Jersey friend, Lorenzo Mulford, and together they returned East to be married, later returning to Cincinnati to make their home. Mr. Mulford died several years ago.

Mrs. Mulford was a prominent figure in the church, and was successively affiliated with the old Central, North and Westminster Presbyterlan Churches.

Mrs. Mulford is survived by four children, Ren Mulford, Jr., Mrs. Joseph R. Tomlin, Price Hill; Mrs. Cuthbert and Frank S. Mulford, of Van Nuys, Cal., and eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. The nineteenth great-grandchild arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Anderson, Oliver avenue, Wyoming, just a few hours after she died.

Ren Mulford, Jr., in commenting on his mother's death last night, said no one realized his mother was growing old, as she always kept pace with the times, and was a great newspaper reader. He said that when she was a young woman she longed to be a newspaper reporter, and with this In view went to her cousin, Edmund Stille, at that time editor of the Philadelphia Public Ledger, and voiced her ambition. The Idea of a woman in Journalism failed to appeal to Mr. Stllle, and her chance of becoming the forerunner of the American newspaper woman was lost.

Funeral services will be conducted at Spring Grove Chapel tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock, a few hours after the arrival of the body from Canada... Burial will be beside the body of her husband. [11]
