Biography

John Strickland Jr. is believed to have been born about 1749 in Edgecombe, Province of North Carolina, the son of John Strickland Sr. and Elizabeth Campbell. His middle name was added to this profile as "Campbell" based on an incorrect Find A Grave Entry.(see Research Notes)

John is thought to have married Elizabeth Appa "Appie" Martin about 1769, in Robeson, Bladen, Province of North Carolina. No Source has been found to confirm this.

John is thought to have died about 1838 in Turkey Creek, Tattnall, Georgia, United States. There is unsourced information (John F. Wise - See Oral History) that suggests John died at his plantation home located between Mushmelon and Watermelon Creeks. No Source has been found to confirm where John died or where he was buried.

Oral History

The only information available, or found so far, has been unsourced oral history. There are two publications found where it seems the majority of the information regarding John Strickland and his wife Appie Martin stem from. Other information online seems to be repeated verbatim, but the original source is unknown. Perhaps shared on unsourced private trees and taken as reliable. While some of it may be correct sources need to be found to confirm.

One of the authors of the publications is Sharlotte N. Donnelly who posted a transcribed family history as told/written? by John F. Wise, who claims that John Strickland is a descendant. Who gave him the information is unknown. No sources are included in the article that are directly about John Strickland and Appie Martin. But there are details given that need to be researched to find confirmation of their accuracy.[1]

The other author is Mary J. Ritch, who's Unsourced information seems to be cobbled together from the Unsourced Find A Grave Bio for Appie. It seems to conflict with the recollection of John F. Wise at times. [2]

Misinformation on John's Burial

This Find A Grave entry was used as "proof" of John's name, however it is unsourced

Find A Grave Entry confirmed to be incorrect

A Find A Grave entry (unsourced) suggests John Strickland is buried in the Marietta National Cemetery in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia. It includes a photo of an undated headstone for a John Campbell Strickland. However the cemetery where the headstone exists was not established until 1866, and was for veterans of the Civil War. A search of Veterans Affairs for the Marietta National Cemetery, (https://www.cem.va.gov/cems/nchp/marietta.asp ), revealed that the John C Campbell in this cemetery died in 1942
