Curtis N. Sturgeon, 53, of Marengo, In. The son of John William & Cora Savedge Sturgeon, was born near Curby, In. on November 2, 1900 and he died at St. Edward's Hospital at, New Albany, In. on January 10, 1954.
At the age of 17, he joined the United States Navy in which he served 4 years. After returning from the service, he married Gladys Archibald. To this union was born one son, Kedrie Sturgeon, of Franklin, In. He lived on a farm near Marengo until 1943, when he accepted a position as agent for Standard Oil Company.
His parents, a brother and three sisters preceded him in death.
Mr. Sturgeon, was shot to death while shoveling snow in his yard at Marengo, Sunday morning January 10, 1954, at about 11:30 am. by his next door neighbor, Cleve Gottfried, who fired six shots from a .22 caliber automatic rifle through the screen on his back porch, four of which struck Mr. Sturgeon, wounding him in the stomach, chest and abdomen. He died about 6:30 p.m. at the St. Edward's Hospital in New Albany, In., where he was taken for emergency operation. The men had quarreled frequently and had argued just before the shots were fired. Cleve Gottfried, 69, was charged with first-degree murder, and eventually was convicted by a jury of manslaughter and sentence to 2 to 21 years in State Prison in Michigan City. He severed several years of that sentence and was released.
Mr. Sturgeon was survived by his wife and son, five sisters, Mrs. Bertha Schriber, of Boswell; Mrs. Ferris Longest, of Remington; Mrs. James Walts, Mrs. Henry Walts, and Mrs. Roscoe Bowman, all of near English, In.
Final rites were held at the Marengo Christian Church, January 13, 1954. Interment was in the El Bethel Cemetery.
