Johanna was the daughter of a carpenter. The family moved around when she was little, and the siblings were born in different locations. Johanna herself was born in Norway, though her family was Swedish. She left home in 1912 and worked as a servant for the Zakrisson family in Los parish. In 1916, she married one of the sons of the family, Petrus. He had taken over the home after the death of his father. Johanna and Petrus were the parents of Anna, Karin, Erik, Stig, and Per.
