Biography

Richard was born about 1514.

He married twice, firstly to Elizabeth Moore of Midgeley, who died in 1546, and secondly to Anne daughter of John Rishworth of Riddlesden.[1][2]

Richard died in 1573 and was buried on 19th July 1573 at Halifax "Rychard Sunderland de Hy Sunderland".[3] He left a will dated 1 June 1573 and proved 5 March 1574 at York, "Sunderlande, Richard, Highe Sunderlande, par. Halifaxe".[4] He left Coley Hall and lands to Richard Sunderland his youngest son, and "remainder if said Ric. the son die without issue, to Abraham my eldest son, and to my daughters, Janet wife of John Hemingway, Agnes wife of Gilbt. Deyne, Mary, Grace, and Sarah". Abraham inherited High Sunderland, although that is not mentioned in the will abstract; the property may already have been given to him. Richard also mentions his brother Edward Sunderland of Halifax and his children Richard, Thomas, Edward, Mary, and Grace. John Rishworth of Northowram, John Woode, Hipperholme, and others, were to be supervisors.[5]

Research Notes

Parentage - Dugdale's Visitation shows parents as "Abraham (Richard) Sunderland" and Judith Oldfield. Although Richard is shown as an alternate name, all the dates of burial, will, and probate given by Dugdale show only the name Richard not Abraham. Richard Sunderland of High Sunderland left a will dated 3 January 1537 and proved 10 January 1543 (old style dates are usually given in the will index, i.e. January 1543/1544).[6] He only mentions three sons, Gilbert, William, and Brian, but the will is largely concerned with redistributing land which had already been given to them, so the other sons Richard and Edward may have already had land settled on them.

Removed alleged daughter Janet Sunderland who married Thomas Hepworth 1577 at Elland. Richard mentions only one daughter Janet in his will 1573, and she is stated to be the wife of John Hemingway, who lived until 1593, so it is not possible for her to have married another husband in 1577.

Lynn: I'm looking at page 95 of Dugdale-Volume I. As you noted, the patriarch of THIS branch was Abraham, aka Richard Sunderland. This Richard was bp aprox 1514. The Margaret Sunderland I am researching married Richard Best Oct 25/1546 in Halifax. She was not a sibling of this Richard but likely a 1st cousin through Abraham/Richard's brother? I'll have to dig further to find Abraham's pedigree to see who his brothers were.
