James Briggs Sutherland was born on 26 December 1856 at Leith, Midlothian. His parents are William Sutherland and Mary Briggs.^[1]

In 1861, James B Sutherland is 4 years old and living at 3 Canon Street, North Leith, with his mother and sister. ^[2]

In 1871 James Sutherland is now 14 years old and living at 61 Prince Regent Street, North Leith, with his parents and siblings.^[3]

On 16 February 1877 at 2 Wilkie Place, North Leith, James B Sutherland married Susan Mcalpin.^[4]

By 1881 James is now 24 years old and employed as a Plumber. He is living with his wife and children at 38 Water Street, 2nd Floor, Leith, Midlothian.^[5]

By 1891 James is now 34 years old, working as a Plumber and residing at 16 Baltic Street, Leith, Midlothian, with his wife and children.^[6]

In 1902, James' wife Susan passed away leaving him a Widower.

On 20 December 1905 James re-married this time to Margaret McGregor M/S Donaldson. The couple married at St James', Leith in accordance to the forms of the Episcopal Church. Margaret was 46 at the time of this marriage giving her an approximate birth year of 1859. Her parents are given as a James Donaldson and a Mary Donaldson M/S (unreadable). Margaret's father is deceased at the time of the marriage however her mother is still living.^[8]

James passed away on the 15 September 1919 at the age of 62 years at 42 Sandport Place, Leith. His cause of death is given as Angina Pectoris and Myocarditis. His death was registered by his son David.^[9][10]

James' second wife Margaret McGregor M/S Donaldson survived him, she died in Leith in 1936 aged 76 years^[11].
