In 1836, when he was 96 years old, he gave a declaration attesting to his younger brother, Joseph's service in the Revolutinary War, as best he could remember it, to assist Joseph's wife in getting an increase in her widow's pension. It begins:
"I am in the 96th year of my age, was born July 21st 1741. My brother Joseph was born July 9th 1747.
I was a soldier in the war of the revolution, & a lieutenant of New Jersey militia before the war closed. I am entirely blind & cannot distinguish one person from another except by the voice. My memory is much impaired as regards accuracy in dates & names... "
(It is a bit difficult to read, but I am working on a transcription of it. He signed with his mark - an "X" written in an unsteady hand. ) [3]
