Biography

Abraham Swailes was born in Maryland in 1801, his parents were Jacob Swailes and Catherine Ruff.

The family relocated to Knox County, Ohio in about 1816.

Abraham was most likely included in the 1820 census of Chester, Knox County which showed his father Jacob and family [1]. The household comprised of 6 people, 3 of each sex.

Abraham was assessed to pay tax in Pike, Knox County in 1827. Also included on the same page are his father Jacob, and his half brother William Vian. [2]

Abraham married Mary Cosner in Ohio on 11 March 1830 [3]

In 1850, Abraham and his family were living in Pike Township, Knox County, included in the household was his widowed father Jacob [4]

The 1880 census showed Abraham with Mary and their youngest child Charles living in Van Buren, Keokuk, Iowa [6]

Abraham passed away in Keokuk, Iowa in 1886, and was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Sigourney. The photograph of his grave marker shows his date of birth as 22 October 1801, and his date of death as 14 April 1886. [7]
