Marriage

On 1 Nov 1823, in Worcester, the marriage was celebrated of Martha Elisabeth Swanepoel with Johannes Marthinus Verlee.

Houdenbek Slave Revolt of 1825

Martha Elizabeth Swanepoel was a witness in the Houdenbek Revolt trial at Worcester[3]. Her husband Johannes Marthinus Verlee was the schoolmaster at the farm of Willem Nicolaas van der Merwe .. and he was one of those murdered on 2 Feb 1825. Martha fled with the wife of Willem and her children into a bedroom, and their life was spared. She most likely had her own newborn son, born on 12 January at the 'Kuyzon' farm, with her. This son was baptised later, on 27 March, after the father's death.

Martha said that she and Verlee had only arrived at Houdenbek a few days previously. Before that, they were living "at Willem Joosten's in the Bokkeveld, far from the late Willem van der Merwe's place".

Research Notes

  • Somebody with her name, 20 years old in 1825, is listed as witness in case of the Houdenbek Slave Revolt of 1825[4]. If this is correct, she was said to be the young widow of Johannes Verlee. Indeed, we find her married to him, with familysearch personal ID L5P8-3K1
