Henry Swift was born in about 1814 in Sutton, Lancashire (per 1871) or Rainhill, Lancashire (per 1851). He was the son of farmer Jonathan Swift.
Henry married Ellen Roughley on 18 Feb 1841 at Christ Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. Both were of full age (21 or more), and neither had been married before. Henry was a miller living in Church Street West Field Eccleston, while Ellen lived in Cowley Hill, Windle. Their fathers were named as Jonathan Swift (farmer) and Edward Roughley (nail manufacturer). The witnesses were Henry Roughley and Alice Roughley.

By June 6th 1841, they were living in Church Street, Westfield, Eccleston; Henry was a corn miller.

Their son Joshua was born on 7 Jul 1841, and christened on 1 Aug 1841 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as miller, and the family's address as Church St. Westfield Eccleston.

and christened on 15 Feb 1846 at St Peter's Church in Liverpool, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as miller, and the family's address as Hornby St.

Ellen died in the first quarter of 1848 in Prescot district, aged 35.

Henry married Mary Page on 8 Aug 1848 at St Mary's Church in Walton on the Hill, Lancashire. Both were living in Kirkdale. Henry was of full age (21 or more) and was a widowed miller; Mary was a minor and hadn't been married before. Their fathers were named as Jonathan Swift (deceased farmer) and William Page (boiler-maker). The witnesses were Sarah Martha Page and Thomas Eilbeck.

By March 30th 1851, they were living in Back Bond Street, Liverpool. Henry was a journeyman miller.
