James was born in 1842 to Franklin Swilley and Vicy Boyd. He may have had at least 11 siblings: General Jackson, Martha Jane, Samuel Elbert, Rachel Rebecca, Francis Marion, Thomas Union, Alfred A, Sarah, Mary, Julia Elizabeth and Celia.
