Biography

OBITUARY - George W. Swopes (Geroge was a brother of Priscilla Swopes/McKiddy/Miller)

George W. Swopes, hero of two wars, pioneer, farmer, hunter, at last is at rest in Half Rock Cemetery, within sight of is old home in Mercer County Missouri, where he has resided for over 40 years. Thus one more familiar landmark has been removed. He died May 27, 1897 at 2 A.M.

Mr. Swopes, a native of Campbell county, East Tennessee, born December 2, 1827. His father was a Virginian, his mother a native of New Jersey. When young his parents moved to Illinois. Thence to Ray County, Missouri where the family resided some 12 years. Then the family moved and settled west of Mill Grove where Mr. Swopes Married December 17, 1848 Miss Sara Brown, a native of Tennessee. About this time Mr. Swopes settled 2 miles west of Half Rock, where he continued to live until his demise. There were born to Mr. and Mrs, Swopes 10 children, 6 boys and 4 girls--4of these, 3 girls and 1 boy have preceded him to the Limitless Beyond.

Mr. George Swopes with his brother John and about 110 others joined the only company to take part in the Mexican War from northern Missouri. He was under Gen. Sterling Price and Capt. John C. Griffin. Entered service in July 1847 and mustered out at Independance in August, 1848 after 13 months service. The deceased was also a soldier of the Civil War. He enlisted August 1864, Co. D, 44 Mo. Inf. He participated in the Battle of Franklin, Nashville and other minor engagements.

Mr. Swopes has been dying a lingering death for several years. He had his first stroke of paralysis some 6 years ago and has from that time gradually become more and more helpless. The last 2 years he has been under the patient and faithful care of Mr. and Mrs. James Swopes. His condition has been such that he was more helpless than a little child and required constant attention both day and night. It is said that but few children pay their parents for the care of infancy and childhood, but surely and constancy and untiring devotion of James Swopes and his faithful companion to their father during such a long seige between life and death would furnish one case of an exception to the general rule.

This writer having charge of the funeral service, being very brief on account of Grandma Swopes (Ruth Emiline Brown or John Swopes wife?), her health being so delicate that she has not been away from home for several months. Burial was May 28, 1897. Deceased was member Baptist Church, Old School

Half Rock Cemetery, Mercer MO
