Haunui Tāwhiao was born in 1882. He was the son of Tawhiao Te Wherowhero and his second wife Rangiaho.
In 1938, Haunui Tāwhiao welcomed all tribes, Governor-General Sir Galway and other distinguished guests to Turangawaewae, for both the opening of Tūrongo House and the investiture of the CBE to Princess Te Puea Hērangi. Korokī was the King at that time and Haunui was his Grand-Uncle. A recording of his speech can be found here[1]
He passed away in 1945.[2]
