Biography

Sarah was born probably in about 1840 in Indiana, probably in the Lewis Creek area in Shelby County. She was the daughter of William Talbert and Mary Ann Fitz Randolph. Her family had moved to Shelby County in Indiana in about 1839 and settled to farm in the Lewis Creek area. She and a brother were living with the Hughs family in 1850 in Taylor, Howard County while attending school. At the age of about 18 in 1858, she married Daniel Poe in Shelby County. They stayed initially in Jackson township in Shelby County where Daniel worked as a farmhand and farmer. They started a family there that would total twelve children, three of whom died very young. By 1880, they had moved to Honey Creek in Howard County where Daniel and a son worked in a mill. By 1900, they had retired and returned to Shelby County and eventually Shelbyville there. Sarah died there in 1914 and is buried with her husband, her parents and other family members in Patterson Cemetery in Lewis Creek, Indiana.
