Charles Tanton was born at Woodchurch, Kent, in 1864 and was christened at the Wesleyan chapel there on 22nd January 1865. He was the seventh of eight children born to farmer George Tanton and his wife Mary Ann (Ring). Charles lived with his family at Aldington in 1871 and at Brabourne in 1881. He was still with his parents at Brabourne ten years later, an unmarried waggoner of 26. Following his marriage in 1892, he was next identified as a farm bailiff and shepherd living at Stone-cum-Ebony in 1901 with his wife and five children. Two more children were born at Stone followed by another three born across the county border at Iden, East Sussex, but by 1911 they were living in Stone again. Charles died in Ashford in 1948.
