Benjamin was born about 1730 in Tyrrell County, North Carolina to William Tarkington and Anne Starke [1] He was mentioned in his father's Will dated February 27, 1747; children listed were: John, Joshua, Benjamin, Joseph, William, Zebulon, Mary, Anne, Sarah and Joanna. In his Will, William's wife's name was listed as Ann, which was later proven to be Ann Starke. His father's Will was recorded October 4, 1748.

Benjamin was included in "A list of the number of inhabitants taken by Stephen Swain from this Marked Poplar Swamp to Scuppernong River this day 1786." His household included himself (one white male 21-60 years), plus plus three white males under 21 (likely his sons Isaac (age 17 to 20), Jeremiah (age 16), and William (age 12); and three white females which would have been his wife Sarah plus daughter Esther (who married in 1787) and one other female (possibly a daughter named Sarah.[4]
Benjamin was also included in US Census record for 1790 in Tyrrell County, North Carolina.[5] This census page includes both Benjamin and his son Benjamin, as well as his sons Zebulon and Isaac.
Benjamin died before 1800, possibly in 1798.
SPECULATION that Benjamin was Zebulon's father based on research that eliminated all other Tarkenton men whose age range met the profile to be Zebulon's father.
