Newspaper Articles

  • Benjamin Taylor was next charged with uttering a forged £10 Bank of England note to Mr. G. Elliott, of Wooley Moor, in the purchase of some pigs. In this case the prisoner Hardy was involved, as he had engaged Taylor, his son-in-law, better known as Hardy, to purchase the pigs for him, and he gave him the "money." The prosecutor's evidence was not at all satisfactorily given, and the Magistrate remanded this case also until this day (Saturday) at ten o'clock. (Derbyshire Times and Chesterfield Herald, 8 September 1860)[1] - Hardy is George Hardy, his step-father in modern terms, from further up the column. No additional report in the following week's paper.
  • A man, named Benjamin Taylor, pleaded guilty to stealing some potatoes, from the yard of the Midland Railway Company. - He was committed to gaol for 14 days. (Derby Mercury, 27 March 1861)[2] - see 1861 Census entry below.
