Poe was born in 1890 near Ottumwa, Iowa. He married Ida Mier in 1913 and they had three children together. Poe worked as a Blacksmith in the 1910s and was exempt from WWI since he was the sole support of his family. In the late 1920s, Poe and family moved to Des Moines to take a job as a mechanic. While testing brakes, he was crushed by the car he was working on and killed in 1929. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Ottumwa, Iowa next to his wife.
