Abraham Kahn's mother walked with him 30 miles to Bremerhaven to catch the ship to bring him to America. He settled in Butler Co., but died in Ohio Co., KY. He was Jewish, but came from Gonnesweiler, Birkenfeld, Grand Duchy of Oldenburg where Jews and Christians were obliged by law when dealing with each other to have at least one witness to their signatures from the faith of the other party. That meant, of course, they had to have dealings outside their own communities, which worked to cut down on the situation which developed in Germany. (Actually, I believe Abe considered himself a native of Alsace-Lorraine which was being ceded by France to Germany as a result of an international agreement about the time Abe left home.)
I don't believe Abe became a Christian, nor that any of his wives became Jewish. I know J. B. and Effie Kahn Taylor were Methodists and so reared their their children. I know J. B. and Effie were married at Abe Kahn's house.
I know that my grandmother, Effie, talked about Belle's children Stella, Claude and Leo. I think my Dad called her husband Uncle Bloch (rhyming with "scotch") and he knew his cousin Leo well.
Everybody in the family seemed to love Abe Kahn and had funny stories to tell about him. He started out as a pedlar and later owned more than a few downtown buildings. He was most generous, gentlemanly, and kind according to many sources.
I'm interested in obtaining Abraham Kahn's will as well as the name of the ship which brought him to America, date of sailing, from what port he left Europe for America, and date of immigration. Do you have information on them?
