Biography

George ( or Jooris) Tayspill

He was born about 1590 in Nieuwkerke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium the son of Giles Tayspill and his wife Francois Godtschalck. The Tayspill's were a distinguished Flemish and Huguenot family of cloth traders. Giles Tayspill, George's father, settled in Colchester, England with his four sons, probably in the 1590s. [1]
The Tayspill's prospered in Colchester, becoming both wealthy and influential. George was a say maker and merchant. He occupied the eminent position in the Dutch church at Colchester between 1627 - 55.
In the summer of 1648, Colchester became embroiled in the English civil war, resulting in a twelve week siege of Royalists, within Colchester's city walls. On finally surrendering, Colchester was to be preserved from pillage by parliamentarian troops upon paying £14,000 in cash. £6000 of this was levied upon the Dutch congregation of Colchester. George headed the list of subscribers to the fine, contributing £500 (a very large sum for the time). [2]
George married Joanna, probably about 1624. They had eight children. [3]
Joanna predeceased her husband, being buried at St Botolph's priory, Colchester, Essex, England on 17 Jun 1638. George was buried in the same place on 23 Aug 1657. His will was proved on 11 Sep 1657 as of George Tayspill, Say Maker of Colchester, Essex. [4]

Yes, it was Giles, this George's father that seems to have made the move from Belgium. He married at Nieppe in 1585, and seems to have moved to Colchester with his young family in the 1590s.

Records in Colchester show that Giles Tayspill was admitted as a Free Burgess in 1597, so maybe it was George's father Giles who made the move from Belgium and George/Jooris may well have been born in Colchester?
