Edward Louis Tesnow was born on 26 January 1879[1] in the state of New York, probably in the city of Amsterdam. His parents were Charles Tesnow and his wife Sara Tesnow, in whose household he was recorded (at age 1) in the 1880 U.S. Census. [2] The census record describes Charles Tesnow as 27 years old and a native of Prussia, employed as "Hostler at mill." Sara Tesnow was 25 years old and a native of New York; her parents were born in Prussia. Others in the household were their daughter Jennie Tesnow, age 5, and Hannah Eikenburg, age 58 and a native of Prussia, described as Charles' mother-in-law.
In 1900 the census recorded Edward "Fesnow" at age 21, living on Maine Street in Amsterdam, New York, in the household of his father Charles, age 47, and mother Sarah, age 45, with siblings Ana L, 16, Grace B, 15, Carl A, 14, Minnie, 11, and Aurthur, 6, and Hana Eiklnburg, 79, "mother." Edward worked as a mill knitter.[3]
He resided in Amsterdam, New York, and worked as a knitter in a commercial knitting mill. His World War I draft registration form identifies his employer as Bland Knitting Company, on Washington St. in Amsterdam.[1]
He married his wife Mary Augusta Markert on 6 November 1905 in Amsterdam, New York.[4] The marriage record calls them Edward L. Tesnow and Mary A. Markert. [5]. They had five daughters.
The 1910 U.S. Census recorded their household in Amsterdam, New York. Household members were Edward Tesnow, 31, a knitter in a knitting mill; Mary Tesnow, 26; and daughters Ethel Tesnow, 4; Hazel Tesnow, 2; and Edna Tesnow, 1. All were born in New York, as was Mary's mother, but both of Edward's parents and Mary's father were born in Germany. Edward and Mary had been married 5 years and Mary had 3 children, all living.[6]
The 1915 New York State Census recorded the family in Amsterdam, living at 86 Fairview Place. Edward L. Tesnow was 36 and a general laborer. Mary A. Tesnow was 32 and employed in housework. They shared their home with five daughters: Ethel M. Tesnow, 9; Hazel B. Tesnow, 7; Edna L. Tesnow, 6; Alice S. Tesnow, 4; and Ruth E. Tesnow, 1. The three older daughters were attending school.[7]
In the 1920 U.S. Census (recorded on January 1), they were in rented quarters on McElwain Ave in Amsterdam. Edward Tesnow, age 40, was a knitter in a knitting mill. Others in the household were wife Mary Tesnow, 36; and daughters Ethel, 14; Hazel, 12; Edna, 10; Alice, 8; and Ruth, 5. All were born in New York; Edward and Mary were both recorded as having fathers born in Germany and mothers born in New York.[8]
Edward L. Tesnow died in Amsterdam at age 43 on 9 September 1922[9] and was buried on 12 September in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam, New York.[10][11]
