Richard was born in Mountrath on 9 Feb 1778 to Quaker parents William Thacker and Ann Walpole.

He married Eleanor Eves in a Quaker ceremony held in Dublin on 17 October 1823.

His first wife died in 1833, and in 1841, a report was made to the Dublin Quaker meeting that Richard Thacker had married again contrary to the Society's rules to a person who was not a Quaker. He was disowned as a result.

He died on 25 September 1861 in his son's house in Dublin,

and was buried in Mt Jerome Cemetery.
