Biography

Mary "Polly" Tharp was the daughter of Perry Tharp and Margaret Shuck, his wife. Her father, Perry Tharp has been incorrectly placed on many family trees because of a mixup in the National Archives. See below. Mary Tharp was born in 1791 in Virginia which later became Kentucky. Her parents migrated to Lincoln County, Virginia, then to Marion County, KY where they were married on 27 Mar 1812. According to Mary Tharp's 1880 census, both her parents were born in Virginia. The boundaries were changed and the area became Lincoln County, Kentucky and later became Washington County and finally in 1834 Marion County, Kentucky. Perry Tharp can be found in the 1800 tax lists in and then again in the 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850 Federal census records there. Mary married Bryant Brinton, Jr in Lebanon, Marion Co, Ky on 27 Mar 1812.

Mary Tharp Brinton tombstone says she was the wife of Bryant Brinton. She died September 26, 1881 aged 91 ys 9 mo. Perry Brinton and Lloyd Brinton were buried near her grave . In 1998, I visited the New Providence Cemetery, and Mary Brinton's tombstone inscription was very worn and appeared to state: "Mary, wife of Bryant Brinton, died January 26, 1881 aged 91y 5 M........." Am not real sure which tombstone reading is correct. In the library, the tombstone inscriptions of New Providence Cemetery have Mary Brinton dying May 26, 1881 aged 91 years 9 months.

  • National Archives Rev War Pension for Perry Tharp

there were 2 pension files merged for Perry Tharp of Pennsylvania, however, in 1954 they were separated into two files. The pension file numbers are as follows: 1. Perry Tharp of this line is pension record number W2973 with a widow, Margaret paid thru Louisville, Kentucky. 2. Another pension file S22551 for Paul Tharp alias Perry Tharp whose pension was paid by a Pennsylvania agency. Paul Tharp applied for a pension on 4 June 1833, a resident of Union Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He was born in Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey in 1748. While a resident of Yorktown York County, Pennsylvania, he enlisted and served a year as a private in Capt. Daudel's and Capt. Miller's Company. He engaged in the battle of Long Island and in the rifle regiment of Col. Thompson and Col. Hand. Following those exploits he was in the Battle of Brandywine and Monmouth. In his 1829 application he referred to his wife Isabella about 60 and his son-in-law, not named. His pension's approval took several years to be approved because his records were confused with Perry Tharp. Perry Tharp also gave depositions for Paul Tharp and vice-versa, probably because of the mix-up in pension records. Perry Tharp was recorded as: Piriah Tharp, Periah Tharp, Parra Tharp, and various variations of Tharp. The Shuch family rallied around Perry and Margaret, with both Andrew Shuch and William Shuch giving depositions. Others besides Perry Tharp mentioned in or giving depositions: Hugh McElroy, Philip Walker, Margaret Tharp, Terry Tharp, Andrew Such, Andrew Suck, A. D. Kirk, Perry Thorp, Margaret Suck, Margaret Such, C. H. Trabue, William Tharp, William L. Kelly, Abram Fulkerson, Thomas B. Nichols, Helen Brenton, A. D. Hiller, Jas. T. Cashman, W. W. VanDyke, J. L.
