John was born about 1821. He is the son of Richard Thomas, gun implement maker, and Priscilla Stockton. He was christened on 3 Sep 1822 Saint Phillips, Birmingham, Warwick, England; the family were living in Staniforth Street[1]. John Thomas married Elizabeth Thornhill on 15 Apr 1845 in St Mary, Handsworth, Staffordshire, England. She was the daughter of William Thornhill, tailor. At the time of their marriage, John was a butcher. The witnesses were William Layfield and Maria Layfield.
