Biography

Jane Emily/ aka Emily Jane Thomas was christened 22 MAY 1853 in Kent, England. She was the daughter of John Thomas and Mary (Unknown). [1]

1871 England and Wales Census--Jane Thomas, aged 17, lived in Sittingbourne, Kent, England (sub-district Milton) in the home of her father, John Thomas, a labourer, aged 48. He had been born in "Halston" (Halstow,) Kent, England. Children (all born in Sittingbourne, Kent) listed in the household: Charles Thomas-Son-15; George -Son-a labourer, aged 13 and Walter-Son-10. Also enumerated was Sarah A Coomber-Visitor-Female-18, born in Hollingbourne, Kent. [2]

02 AUG 1874--Jane Emily Thomas married Thomas Marshall Hodge. The bride, aged 21 was the daughter of John Thomas. The 22 year-old groom was the son of Aaron Hodge. The marriage was solemnized at Sittingbourne, Kent, England. [3]

Her husband passed away in the last quarter of 1880.

1881 England and Wales Census--Emily J. Hodge, a 23 year-old widow and domestic housekeeper lived in the household of John Thomas. She had been born in Sittingbourne, Kent. John was a brickfield labourer, aged 52, born in Halstow, Kent. Two children were also listed in the home as grand daughters of John Thomas. They were Rosina J Hodge-Grand Daughter-6 and Frances E Hodge- Grand Daughter- 5, both born in Sittingbourne, Kent, England. [4]

Her daughters emigrated to the United Sates. Frances (Hodge) Hunting's death certificate lists Jane Thomas as her mother. [5]

Daughter, Rosina Hodge, married Rockwood C. Kendall and passed away 10 DEC 1914. Her son Woodrow Wilson (Kendall) Cross (1913-1986) was adopted by a daughter of Jane's sister-in-law Clara Elizabeth Walton

Jane Emily passed away after 1881, probably JUL-AUG-SEP 1892.

1891 Census- Jane E. Tyler, aged 38, wife of Benjamin Tyler, a general labourer, aged 39. They lived on Murston Rd. in Sittingbourne, Kent (Reg. District: Milton) and had a nine year-old son, also named Benjamin Tyler. All family members had been born in Kent, England. [7]

Other possible records show children probably born to this couple between 1882 and 1890, including William, Jane, Alfred Edward and James.

21 MAY 1892-Jane Emily Tyler, aged 39, was buried in Sittingbourne, Kent. [8]
