James was born on 17 June 1817 in Pennsylvania, USA. He was the son of Joseph Thomas and Sylvia Thomas. When James was 19 he married Jinsey Strader on 12 January 1837 in Meade County, Kentucky, USA. The couple had one child: Jospeh Thomas. When James was 22 he married Rebecca Ann Seely on 1 December 1839 in Meade, Kentucky, USA. The couple had 5 children: James White Thomas, Colesta Ann Thomas, Achilles Thomas, Mary M Thomas and Martha Jane Thomas.
