Mary (Thompson) Staples was born in Lancashire, England.



Mary Ann was born on 15 September 1828 in Burton in Kendal, Westmorland, England; she was the daughter of Edward Thompson and Louisa Rachel (Nelson) Thompson.

She was 20 years old when she married Charles Wright at the residence of Mr Cook, Esq, at the Kowie River Mouth on 7 May 1849.[1]

After Charles died in 1860 she married Henry Warner Staples, details unknown.

The Grahamstown Journal carried the following report in its 26 December 1865 edition:[2][3]

DIED at Pleasant Vale, Chalumna District, British Kaffraria, on the 23rd December 1865, after a painful and lingering illness, borne with Christian resignation and patience, Mary Ann, the beloved wife of Henry Warner STAPLES, and relict of the late Charles WRIGHT, aged 38 years. She leaves six children to mourn their irreparable loss.
