Biography

Mary (Thomson) Spalding was born in Scotland.

Mary Thomson was born in about 1796^[1][2][3] in the market town of Hamilton, located near the confluence of the Avon and the Clyde rivers in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Mary was the daughter of Thomas Thomson (abt.1760-) and Mary (Brown) Thomson (1766-),^[3] who had been married at Hamilton on 20 July 1794.^[4] Mary had a younger brother named Thomas born about a year after Mary in Hamilton.^[5]

Banns for the marriage between Mary Thomson and Peter Spalding (1784-1860) were posted on 19 April 1818 and they were married in the Old Parish Church in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland the following week on 26 April 1818.^[6][7]

1. William Spalding (1821-1876)^[8]
2. Margaret Spalding (1833-1869)^[1] Margaret possibly married John McLeod in 1864.^[9] She died at Stonehouse, Lanarkshire in 1869 at age 36.^[10]
3. Lillias Spalding (1835-1883)^[1][11] died in 1883 at age 48 in Larkhall, Lanarkshire.^[12]
4. Janet Spalding (1837-1899)^[1][13] Janet married George Brooks in 1864 at Larkhall, Lanarkshire.^[14] Prior to her marriage, Janet had a daughter, Mary Thomson Lang, in 1863 to James Lang.^[15][16] After her mothers marriage, Mary was raised by Janet's mother.^[17] Janet died in 1899 at age 62 in Larkhall.^[18]

Mary and Peter raised their family in London Street, Larkhall in the parish of Dalserf, Lanarkshire.^[1][2] Peter worked in the coal mining industry and their daughters in the weaving industry. These were the two main industries for the residents of Larkhall, a small town and collection of "hamlets, rows of houses, and dwellings, in its immediate vicinity"^[19] about 4 miles south east of Hamilton in Dalserf parish. Shortly before Mary and Peter's marriage, an 1816 map of Lanarkshire shows a number of coal pits around Larkhall.^[20] By about 1840 coal was worked at nine different pits with even further developments in the 1860s and 1870s.^[21]

In addition to their own children, Mary and Peter helped raise their son William's twin children born in 1846, Helen^[22] and William,^[23][1] after the twins' mother, Helen Cunningham, had died prior to 1851. Fifteen year old William was with his grandparents at London Street, Larkhall in 1861,^[2] while Helen was a Domestic Servant with her father William and step-mother Mary at 64 Townhead Street, Hamilton.^[24] Helen, married Robert Lang on 3 July 1868 in Dalserf, Lanarkshire.^[25]

As well as raising William's twin children, after her husband's death and daughter Janet's marriage in 1864, Mary raised Janet's illegitimate daughter, Mary Thomson Lang, who was 8 years old^[26][27] and with her grandmother Mary at Larkhall in 1871.^[17]

Mary's husband, Peter, died in 1862 in London Street, Larkhall when in his late seventies.^[28] Mary died in 1880 at age 84 in Larkhall, Lanarkshire, Scotland.^[3][29]

Research Notes

Peter Spalding's name was variously also spelt "Spalden" and "Spaldin".

There are gaps in the known children's birth dates. No baptisms have been found for any of the children, nor the 1841 census for Mary and her family, so Peter and Mary may have had other children. A possible son was David Spalding, who married Marian Love on 30 June 1843 at Glasgow.^[30] They had a daughter baptised at Lanark, Lanarkshire in 1852 named Lillias Love Spalding, perhaps named after her aunt.^[31]

The 1871 census collector recorded Mary as "Mrs Petter Spalding", age "55, Housewife".^[17]
