Notes
Dougald was born to parents Duncan and .........?........... Thomson between 1836 and 1847 in Scotland.
In 1871 he worked as a gardner in London and lived at a boarding house run by Caroline Hewlett at Pomona Place in Fulham, London.
At 34 years of age, Dougald married Elizabeth Sarah Clark at St. Alban's, Hertfordshire on 2 December 1871.
Son Edmund was born in April 1878 at Holloway, Middlesex before Elizabeth tradically died sometime after the birth between 1878-1881. Edmund was consequently raised by his grandparents and it appears Dougald never featured in his life.
Widower Dougald continued to work as a gardner at the 'Heathfield' Estate of Wine Merchant John Cunningham where he resided at the Lodge on the estate located in the Town of Winkfield, Berkshire.
On the 15 August 1884 he remarried to Sarah Ann Longden who was a maid at the estate main residence. Sarah came from a family of Stone Masons located at Thornbury, Gloucestershire.
First born son to his second marriage James (Duncan) was born at Twyford, Berkshire in 1885.
With his new family Dougald immigrated to New Zealand in 1885 taking up residence at Timaru on the South Island.
The Thomson family flourished in New Zealand with sons William Louis, Norman, Harold and Edgar all being born in Timaru.
Dougald's life came to an untimely death at Landsborough on 23 December 1889 from Congestion of the Kidneys (Natural Causes). The Landsborough district is a mountainous region east of Timaru where timber logging was the main industry.
Dougald had 6 sons at time of his death aged 10, 5, 4,2,1 & 6 weeks (Edmund from previous marriage, Duncan, William, Norman, Harold and Edgar.
Dougald's wife Sarah was compelled to return to England with her family presumably as a result of lack of income.
