He was a farmer.^[1] He was the son of Peter Thomson and Jane Begg.^[2]

Gravestone inscription of his son: In memory of Alexander Taylor Thomson of Rosedale Gippsland Victoria Australia died at Elphilock Leochel Cushnie aged 47 and his father and mother Peter Thomson late farmer of Balnakellie, Cushnie, who died 27th Jan'y 1861 aged 64 years and Jane Elmslie who died 18th June 1862 aged 61 years^[3]
