Sarah was born on 12 Dec 1808 in Compton-Abbas, Dorset. Thomas was born seven years later in Toller-Porcorum and baptized on 17 Sep 1815. In 1841, Thomas (25) was living with his father Thomas (60) in Toller P. Thomas and Sarah were married on 26 May 1842 in Tarrant Rushton at the ages of 33 and 26. They appear to have been first cousins although it is possible that instead of having a common grandparent, there had been two Robert Courtneys in Toller Porcorum.
In 1844, Thomas and Sarah were tenants of a cottage and garden in Toller. The owner, Thomas Thorner, may have been his father.[1]
In 1851, Thomas (35) and Sarah (41) lived with Thomas Sr. (70), Mary Jane (7), Hester (4), and Joseph (1). Thomas Sr. and Jr. were working as agricultural labourers. Unfortunately, baby Joseph died a few months later and was buried on 7 Feb 1852.
In 1858, Thomas was admitted to Dorchester Prison for stealing barley. He was described as 5'9" tall with curly brown hair, blue eyes, and a tan complexion. He had lost little finger of his right hand and the other 3 fingers of the right hand were crooked.[2]
In 1861, Sarah (52) and Thomas (45) had daughters Mary Jane (18), Hester (15) Louisa (8) and Sarah (5) at home. Sarah Sr. (55) died and was buried on 12 May 1864. In 1871 and 1881, Thomas, who was still working on a farm, had only his daughter Sarah at home. Thomas lived to 80. He was buried on 11 May 1895 in Toller Porcorum.
