Thomas, the son of William Thorpe and Ellen, was baptised on March 16, 1837 in Ebberston, Yorkshire, England.[1][2][3] Between 1851 and 1866 he emigrated to Canada, where he married Susan Gordon on June 19, 1866 in Wellington, Hillier, Prince Edward, Ontario.[4]

They lived in Egremont after their marriage, and between 1881 and 1893 they had moved to Michigan, United States.[5]
