Biography

Elizabeth Threlkeld was born about 1385, based on the 1409 IPM of her father, which stated that she was 24 years and more in that year. She was one of two daughters of William Threlkeld and his first wife Margaret, the presumptive coheirs of their father. She married, perhaps before 1399, William Lancaster, brother of Sir John Lancaster. The marriage had children. ^[1]

However, the birth of a son, Henry Threlkeld, to Sir William and his second wife Katherine reduced the prospects of the sisters. Elizabeth and her sister Margaret received as their portions a moiety of the manor of Yanwath. ^[2] The change in the succession to Sir William Threlkeld's estate led, eventually, to armed violence based on conflicting claims.
