Alcey was the daughter of Nathan Thurman who made his will in Cumberland County, Kentucky in 1828. His widow, named in later administration documents, was named Judith but it is not known if this was Alcey's mother.
Alcey's date of birth is estimated from when she would have married to Nathaniel Smith and gave birth to her first known child, Susan M. Smith. The other children of Nathaniel and Alcey Smith were; Harriett, Francis, and Elizabeth Smith.
The name of Alcey's second husband appears to have been C. Barton. He was paid by Nathaniel's father, William Smith, for his wife's 1/3 dower interest in two slaves during the administration of Nathaniel's estate.
Alcey and Nathaniel's daughter Susan married to Aaron Harlan after Nathaniel died and his father William Smith became guardian of Harriett, Francis, and Elizabeth until his death in 1834. The children were then appointed James Baker as guardian. Harriet married to Benjamin Vaughn in 1835.
