Biography

Samuel Tice was born in Appalachia, in Maryland.
Samuel Tice was an early pioneer in Kansas.

Samuel Nelson Tice was born on 05 Sep 1830 in Washington, Maryland, USA[1] as the eighth child of John Andrew Tice and Anna Eliza Stoner. He had eight siblings, namely:

  4. John Andrew Tice (1827 - 1849)
  5. Eliza Ann (Tice) Highfield (1828 - 1866)
  6. Susannah (Tice) Huffman (~1829 - 1901)
  7. Catherine Tice (~1829 - )
  8. David Ezra Tice (1834 - 1865)
  9. Sara Tice (1836 - )
  10. Martha R. (Tice) Culver (~1836 - 1903)
  11. Martha Rebecca Tice (1837 - )
  12. Jonathan Wesley Tice (1838 - 1864)

He died on 21 Jan 1905 in Beloit, Mitchell, Kansas, USA[2] When he was 25, he married Sarah Wagner, daughter of Benjamin Franklin Wagner and Mary Chapin Hunt, on 16 Aug 1856 in Louisa, Iowa, USA[2].

In infancy, he and his parents moved from Maryland to Wayne Co., Indiana where he grew up[2]. By 1850 Samuel is found in Grandview, Louisa, Iowa, USA[3] shortly after which, he moved to Goshen, Muscatine, Iowa, USA[4]. He registered for the Military Draft on 01 Jul 1863 in Pleasant Valley, Johnson, Iowa[1]. No record is found of him having served in the military. In 1878 he and his family moved to Turkey Creek, Mitchell, Kansas, USA[5] via covered wagon[2]. The winter of 1880-1881 (The Snow Winter ) was one of the most brutal winters in American history. And in the following years Blizzards hit one after another (possibly as a result of the eruption of Krakatoa). The Plains Blizzard of late 1885. Bet. Dec 1885-Mar 1888 (Blizzards) The Kansas Blizzard of 1886 on 13 Nov 1886 and the Great Plains Blizzards of late 1886. and finally the Schoolhouse Blizzard of 1888[6],

He was buried in Beloit, Mitchell, Kansas, USA (Elmwood Cemetery)[7]. He was employed as a Farmer. He served as Justice of the Peace in Diagonal, IA[2].

  • 3.Joshua Edgar Tice “Ed” was born about 21 Jun 1862 in Muscatine, Iowa, USA. He died on 20 Mar 1924 in Colorado Springs, El Paso, Colorado, USA. He married Mary A. McCauley on 17 May 1888 in Scottsville, Mitchell, Kansas, USA.
  • 4.John Willard Tice was born on 21 Dec 1864 in Iowa, USA. He died on 28 Jan 1865.
  • 5. Charles Bertie Tice was born on 27 Jan 1867 in Johnson County, Iowa, USA. He died in 1927 in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa, USA. He married Sadie J. McGee on 18 Nov 1892 in Saline County, Kansas, USA.
  • 6. Harry R Tice was born in Sep 1869 in Ohio, USA. He died on 24 May 1947 (Died at age 63 yrs., 9 mo, 1 day). He married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Martin in Sep 1898 in Rock Creek, Nemaha, Kansas, USA.
  • 7. Ira Nelson Tice was born on 02 Jan 1872 in Adams, Iowa, USA. He died on 03 Jul 1929 in Beloit, Mitchell, Kansas, USA (at his home). He married Isabella May Sanders on 20 Dec 1899 in Cottonwood Falls, Chase, Kansas, USA.
  • 8. Lena Leota Tice was born on 23 Oct 1873 in Adams County, Iowa, USA. She died on 21 Feb 1963 in (Community Hospital), Beloit, Mitchell, Kansas, USA. She married Samuel Oscar Lukens on 05 Apr 1898 in Mitchell, Kansas, USA.
