James and his wife Alice died in 1909 leaving eight children. The oldest, Madeline, and the youngest, Wendell, were taken to Nova Scotia by James' sister Harriet after making arrangements with U.S. relatives for the other children. Harriet's daughter Orrie took in Madeline and her other daughter Alice took Wendell.
