Biography

Charlotte Tiffner was born in Marietta, Ohio in 1849. She left home at about age seventeen, She probably traveled by train since the rail system existed from Ohio to back east to ship farm products. The route followed the Ohio river to Wheeling then followed the valleys to Pittsburgh. A distance of about 135 miles, a days travel. She arrived in Pennsylvania as a member of the First Baptist Church, Duquesne, Pa. for communion on June 10, 1868. The 1870 census shows her as a domestic help in the large Mason family. I visited with her descendants, now living in Canada, about her relation with her West Virginia family, She gave them false information about the family. She was not mentioned in Henry's will in 1877. She married William Anderson Henderson "a imigrant from Scotland" on March 18, 1875. His mother was a Mason a sister to the head of the Mason household that she lived with. They moved to Canada in 1883 and raised six children, the last two born in Canada. She died on June 8, 1926 at age 81. The death certificate was not accurate due to the misinformation that she gave her family over the years,
