  • Source: S531 Media: Internet Abbreviation: Email STOKES - 26-Jun-1998 Title: Email STOKES - 26-Jun-1998 Author: Betty STOKES Publication: bdsjh@hal-pc.org Text: William DAWSON married Nancy TILLETT, daughter of George TILLETT of Fairfax Co., VA, prior to 1806. George TILLETT died leaving a will dated 8-Mar-1806, which was proved in Fairfax, by which he devised real estate to his children, including: James TILLETT who lived in Fairfax, Samuel TILLETT who lived in Nelson Co., KY, Nancy DAWSON who lived in Pendleton Co., KY, and Mildred POWELL who lived in Nicholas Co., KY. James TILLETT was named executor (Fairfax Co., VA Will bk I, pg 458). CONT Apparently disputes arose over the division of the property and Samuel TILLETT, William DAWSON and Mildred POWELL executed in KY powers of attorney authorizing Richard RATCLIFFE, a Fairfax attorney to represent them in the dispute. James TILLET commenced a friendly suit over the matter in 1809, and the Court rendered a decision that the lands be divided among the nine TILLETT children and their heirs. The three KY heirs then sold their shares to James TILLETT by deed dated 13-Nov-1811 (Fairfax Co., VA Deed bks J2, pg 174 & M2, pg 110-16). CONT Between 1811 and 1813, William DAWSON and also a John DAWSON (probably his sone) moved from Pendleton Co., KY to Bracken Co., KY. They were both listed as delinquent in payment of their Pendleton Co. 1813 taxes, and the comment was "Moved to Bracken Co." (Pendleton Co., KY Order bks A & B, pg 512, Janet K. PEASE, 19720. CONT William DAWSON died in Bracken Co. in 1854 at age 82, leaving a will dated 8-Feb-1845, which was probated in Mar-1854 in which he named his sons John, Reuben, William and James and his daughters Peggy UNDERWOOD, Nancy MALLORY, Hannah PEED, Elizabeth PRICE and Eliza DAWSON. Apparently his wife Nancy and son Thomas had died. Italicized: Y Paranthetical: Y

Land bound by the north and south branches of said creek. George MASON and John WAUGH, junr. gent. hounoured friends. CONT Witnesses: Mary THOMPSON, Mary DAVIS, jOhn DAVIS, Richard EVANS, Martha WEST, Richard Ho? and Jno. CONT CONT TURLEY Family Records, pg 14 CONT George MASON, in a letter dated 10-Jul-1700 mentioned that Ensign Giles VANDECASTEEL and six men were to range on the upper Potomac river and Coronet Burr HARRISON was to range from Occoquon Creek down to Potomac Creek. CONT CONT Giles VANDECASTEEL's will, recorded in Stafford Co., VA, is included with these records because of the possible connection; he calls TILLETs his "cousins" and it may it may be that the name Giles, which was used by so many TILLETs and TURLEYs, was in honor of this Giles VANDECASTEEL. His widow Martha married John WAUGH, son of Rev. John WAUGH, and his daughter Pricilla married James HAY. CONT CONT The part of the will beginning "fifthly" is difficult to understand, but a later deed, recorded in Prince William Co., VA court, confirms a 150 acre bequest to John TILLET. Benoni TILLET is not listed on the deed. In 1761, however, in Fairfax Co., VA, William PEAKE willed his son Humphrey PEAKE "land father bought of Benoni TILLET." Perhaps this is the land Benoni received from his brother John TILLET which was due him from the estate of Giles VANDECASTEEL. Italicized: Y Paranthetical: Y

Notes

Note HI252(Research):There may be another generation between the generation with John and brother Giles, and the John who married Millicent. This is hinted at in the following deed:
Prince William Co., VA Deed bk A, pg 159
...Dividend of land containing 150 be same more or less lying scituate & being in the Parish and County aforesaid & on the North side of Occoquon River & is part or parcell of land containing 300 acres formerly sold and conveyed by Johnathan MATHASHEAD to Giles VANDICASTEEL by Deed dated the __ day of __ Anno Domini ___ and by the said Giles VANDICASTEEL assigned unto John TILLETT grandfather to the aforesaid John TILLETT party to these presents during his natural life & after his decease to John TILLETT & the aforesaid Giles TILLETt and their Heirs forever, unto which the said John, the aforesaid John TILLETT party to these presnet is heir at law...
If there were only two John TILLETTs the text should have read: "and after his decease to the aforesaid John and Giles TILLETT.
Note NI252His will is mentioned in Prince William Co., VA Will bk C., pg 12 & 77. It mentions his wife, Millicent, sons George, John and "the child Millicent is now carrying." Morris VEAL and John TURLEY were appointed executors.
The last will and testament of John TILLETT directed that a tract on Sandy Run be equally divided between George and John TILLET. The division was made by Edward FORD and Francis and John COFFER. George TILLET was apprehensive that an 'elder patent of Mr. KEITH's may take some part' of the land allocted to him so John TILLETT entered into bond that he would make up the deficiency. Fairfax deed bk R, pg 41-45. Plat is page 44, 8-Sept-1778.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Tillet-20 and Tillett-124 do not represent the same person because: Documented dates of birth and death are clearly different by decades. Spouses are clearly different. Children are documented and different. Clearly two different profiles.
Tillet-20 and Tillett-124 appear to represent the same person because: Giles Vandecasteel Tillett is the common child of both although not yet added to Tillett-124. Ditto for the rest of the children of Tillett-20. See: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/KZVX-PP1

Benoni/Bonony is spelled differently but, if one goes down the Tillett family tree, Benoni remained a family name for generations. I opted for the DoB shown on https://sites.rootsweb.com/~unab22/tillet.htm because it quite detailed. In addition, there is a contemporaneous reference to Benoni selling property to the Rev. Lee Massey, George Mason's grandfather, which means he must have reached the age of majority before his father death in 1698. Thus, he is unlikely to have been born circa 1688.
