Anders enlisted with the Union army 18 Jan 1862 from Winneshiek County, Iowa for the War of the Rebellion. He was a Private in Company G Iowa 12th Volunteer Infantry and a Private and Corporal in Company K Wisconsin 15th Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded and made a prisoner of war 31 Dec 1862 in Stones River, Tennessee. He was mustered out and discharged 2 May 1863 due to disability. He enlisted again 30 Mar 1864 and was mustered 28 Apr 1864. He was mustered out 20 Jan 1866 in Memphis, Tennessee.[8][9][10]
