Walter was born in about 1558 probably in Oxford, Oxfordshire. He was the son of John Tolderby and Alyce (Unknown) Tolderbury.
In 1567 he was named in the will of his father John. The terms of the will indicate that Walter was one of the younger of John's children. [1]
Walter and his wife Ann had at least five known children:
The Visitation of Berkshire states that his daughter Katherine, married Edward Garrard of Inkpen, Berkshire. [2] The Visitation describes him as Walter Foldervey (sic) of the City of Oxford.
He was named in the 1612 will of his nephew William Toldervey of Oxford. [3]
By an ancient privilege of the University, the Mayor and fifty-eight burgesses of the City of Oxford were required to swear year by year to observe the privileges of the University. The oath was as follows : — We shall swear that ye shall keep and cause to be kept the liberties and customs of this University, not being contrary to such liberties as ye justly have in execution, standing also in force by the King’s final grants and orders made and taken for the quiet and weal of this University and of the town also or city. So help you God and the holy contents of this book.’ James is recorded as swearing the Oath in 1569, 1570 and 1573. [4]Walter was recorded taking the oath in 1613; the only year his name appears in that list.
According to an apprenticeship document for his son Joseph, Walter was an apothecary in Oxford. [5] Joseph was apprenticed to goldsmith John Williams.
A document, written in Latin, and dated 8 Dec 1630, ascertained that Walter, now of Inkpen in the county of Berkshire, had died and that his wife was named Ann. The document also mentioned his son in law Edward Gerrard and the cleric John Prince of Great Shefford, Berkshire. [6][7]
A potential wife for Walter is Ann Jenkins of Adderbury, OXfordshire who was named in the 1603 will of her father John Jenkins as Anna Tolderbery. [8]
