Biography
Orval was born Jan. 15, 1899 in Oconto, Wisconsin, he was the son of Sam Tolman Sr. and Phoebie Forcier-Tolman.
On July 12, 1920, 21 year old Orval Tolman was joined in marriage with 19 year old May Raymond in Marquette, MI by Justice of the Peace Theodore Thorsen. The witnesses were Samuel Tolman, brother of the groom, and Frank Pepin, both of Gwinn, MI. Their marriage was blessed with 11 children, June, Lila, Orval, Mearl, Dean, Carol, Warren, Nancy, Alice, Orvella and Charlotte.
On his World War I Draft Registration dated Sept. 12, 1918, he disclosed he was living in Gwinn, MI and working as a Woodsman/Foreman for the I. Stephenson Co. [1] On the 1920 U.S. Census "Orvil" is listed as 21 yrs old and single. He's employed as a Blacksmith's helper in a local Iron Mine in Forsyth Township in Marquette county. He later went on to work sailing the Great Lakes, and eventually took a job working for the Escanaba Paper Company where he worked until his retirement.
Mr. Tolman passed away in Escanaba, MI on December 17, 1961 from emphysema, he was 62 years old. [2]
