William Towerton was born in 1853 in Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England.
Together with his parents and siblings, William migrated to Australia aboard the Irene; departing London on 13th July 1858 and arriving at Port Adelaide on 5th November 1858. The family then made their way to Queensland, where they settled.
William married Elizabeth Higgins in 1877 in Queensland. They had 14 children, four of whom died in infancy, and another in his early teens.
William was a bookmaker, having completed his apprenticeship under William Oldham of Ipswich.
He passed away in 1925 and is buried in Ipswich Cemetery.
