He is noted in the 1851 Census as Thomas Trist but in the 1861and 1871 Census is Thomas Trist Arscott. Further information from his Marriage Certificate names Thomas Trist, butcher, as his father. Mary Dyer Arscott, his mother, lived close by.
Thomas, Harriet (wife) and Anne arrived in NZ in 1875 after an adventurous voyage in the White Rose.
