Biography

Private Drury Trites served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in World War I
Service started: 31 Mar 1915
Unit(s): 6th Battalion CMR
Service ended: 1 Feb 1916

Drury was born March 10, 1897 in Moncton, New Brunswick. He was a son of Abner Trites and Frances (Gibson) Trites of Moncton.[1] His father was a farmer and railway worker.

Prior to enlistment, he was alternately listed in records as a farmer or a fireman with the Canadian National Railway.

He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces near the outset of World War I, attesting that he was a farmer and living in Moncton on March 31, 1915. He was attached to the 6th Canadian Mounted Rifles and sailed with his unit on Sept 20, 1915. He served in England.[2][3]

As early as 1915 when still training in Amherst, he was presenting with cardiac issues which would affect his ability to serve, including mitral regurgitation and endocarditis. He applied for a pension as early as November 1915, when still in Shorncliffe, England with his unit. Among the statements made in his claim, he testified that his heart issues only began after his enlistment and were due to exposure during military service. The initial medical board found only that he was unfit for military service, that the duration and extent of his disability was uncertain and that he should be returned to Canada for medical observation and final disposition of his case.[2]

Drury was discharged on February 1, 1916 for being medically unfit. He was shipped back to Quebec City.[2]

He married Lena Carrier Brown on March 20, 1918 in Westmorland County. She was a daughter of Ernest and Frances Brown.[4]

By 1921, he was again living in Moncton with his wife and 1 child and was once again working as a locomotive fireman.

Drury passed away on December 5, 1923 in Moncton of an acute infection. He was interred at the Elmwood Cemetery.[1]
