Biography

Flag of Yorkshire (adopted 2008)
Andrew Truelove was born in Yorkshire, England.
Andrew Truelove was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to Van Diemen's Land

Andrew was born in 1827. His parents were Abraham Truelove and Elizabeth Gladly. He was christened on 7 September 1827 at All Saints Church, Darfield, Yorkshire.[1][2]

Andrew appears with his parents and siblings in the 1841 census at Wombwell, Yorkshire. Andrew then seems to disappear from the England Census records and there does not seem to be a death registration for him in the GRO.

In 1842 an Andrew Truelove, age 15, was convicted of larceny in Yorkshire and was whipped and imprisoned for 2 weeks. [3] In September 1844 he appears again at the West Riding Quarter Sessions at Sheffield, Yorkshire and is convicted of larceny and is sentenced to 6 months imprisonment. [4]

Andrew Truelove, age 18, was a sailor, that was tried at the Old Bailey on 20 August 1845 and convicted of stealing 3 headfasts, value 30s, the property of William Smith and another, and a quantity of rope, value 25s, the property of William Henry Hobbs, in vessels on the River Thames. He was sentenced to 3 months in Newgate Prison. [5] Andrew Truelove of Wombwell appears in the Britain, Merchant Seamen, 1835-1857 records. [6]

Andrew Truelove was convicted again in Tyrone, Ireland in 1847 and Transported in 1848 on the ship Pestonjee Bomanjee to the Colony of Tasmania, Van Diemen's Land for 7 years. The ship left Dublin on 20 September 1848 and arrived on 2 January 1849. [7] Records show that he was born in Wombwell near Sheffield. [8] Further evidence that this was Andrew is shown when his parents are named as Abraham and Elizabeth Truelove in another record. [9]

Andrew Truelove had a Ticket of Leave granted in 1855. This probably meant he stayed in the Colony of Australia.[10]
