Biography

Gustav Truttschel, now engaged in general farming on section 28, Mosel township, is well known throughout Sheboygan county as a progressive and prosperous agriculturist. He was born in the township in which he now resides December 27, 1864. He is a son of Ernst Truttschel, also a prominent farmer. Gustav Truttschel received his early education in the common schools of Sheboygan county and worked upon his father's farm until 1887. He learned the cheese making trade in the town of Lima and after spending one year upon the home farm he went to Hilbert Junction, Calumet county, and engaged in the occupation of cheese making. He spent one summer in the employ of Gust Pflugrath and in 1890 returned to Mosel township to accept a position with the firm of Schreiber & Strauss, where he was engaged along the lines of the trade which he had learned. In the following year he gave up his activities in the employ of Schreiber & Strauss and bought his present farm of sixty acres of land, which he has developed and improved since that time. He is a practical farmer and learned the business when he was still a boy by the personal experience which he gained in assisting his father. He has been successful as an agriculturist and takes a scientific and intelligent interest in each new discovery which makes the cultivation of the soil simpler and more efficient. He was at one period in his life engaged in the saloon business, in which line of activity he was prominent for twelve years. In 1903, however, he severed this connection and is now engaged solely in the occupations and duties incident to his agricultural life.

On the 21st of March, 1891, Mr. Truttschel was united in marriage to Miss Augusta Lange, a daughter of August and Wilhelmina Lange, natives of Germany, who were born in Frankfort on the Oder in the province of Brandenburg, and came to the United States in 1873. Mr. and Mrs. Truttschel are the parents of four children: Alma; Leola, a graduate of the Mosel district schools; Elmer, and Lonie. Mr. Truttschel gives his political allegiance to the Republican party and has always been active in local public affairs. He held the position of postmaster of Mosel for eight years and was active in this capacity up to the time when the government installed the rural free delivery service in Sheboygan county. He has served as justice of the peace and was supervisor for three years. He held the office of school treasurer for twelve years and his work in this capacity was able and efficient. Mr. Truttschel is a man of broad intelligence and of liberal mind and these qualities were valuable assets to him in his public life. ^[1]
